Design Manager

  • Sector: Design & Technical
  • Location: Brentwood, Essex
  • Job type: Permanent
  • Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 per annum + package
Job description

I’m working with one of the market leading PLC house builders who are looking to strengthen their team with a Design Manager out of their Essex region. This is a new position due to increased work load and a strong pipeline of work coming through.

As Design Manager you will be involved in a number of low rise traditional housing projects across the Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk regions with many of these being brownfield sites each with their own complex problems to solve. You will manage the design process reporting on planning, architectural and engineering aspects of the business from land acquisition through to the completion.

You will ideally be degree qualified and from an architectural, engineering or other relevant background and will need to have strong residential or mixed use (including residential) experience. You will ideally be working for a house builder, developer or contractor with a strong proven track record and can hit the ground running although ongoing support from senior level management will always be offered.

This particular role will be very varied making every day different from the last and keeping you constantly interested and challenged. You will manage the in-house designers as well as liaising with external architects to ensure that the best possible design is optimised, saving revenue and contributing to the company’s operating profits. You will work closely with the land, development, construction and sales teams all the way through the development process providing technically correct information as required.

You will need to be a strong team motivator who is career driven and calm under pressure. You will effectively take the role of Lead Designer under the CDM Regulations and be able to deliver planning consents to the agreed time scales. In return you will be part of a close ‘family feel’ team who all get on extremely well and are there to help each other out. There will be ongoing support, training and career progression on offer should you wish to take your career to the next level. The staff turnover is relatively low compared to other competitors so if you want longevity then this is something to consider.

Key Requirements:

  • Degree qualified in Architecture, Civil Engineering or other relevant related field.
  • At least 4 years’ experience working on residential or mixed use projects, ideally from working a house builder, developer or contractor.
  • Able to manage an in house design team and confident in liaising with external designers to ensure that best practice is followed.
  • A strong team motivator with high attention to detail and able to demonstrate experience of working in a similar role at the level of either Planner, Architectural Technician or Design/Engineer.
Calm under pressure, able to make effective decisions, quickly and confidently
