Here at TDM Recruitment Group we take pride in our team’s success, focusing on our homegrown talent, as demonstrated in the achievements in our consultants who have worked hard to succeed within a difficult market.
In the coming weeks we shall be exploring the backgrounds and development of several of our consultants that cover the diverse areas of the residential property industry. Now into our second week, we will be focusing on Darren Butland, a Principal Consultant within TDM, who heads up our Residential Design and Technical Team
Darren, when did you start at TDM Recruitment Group?
I started working at TDM in March of 2015, so have been here for just over three years. At the time I hadn’t too long relocated to deepest Kent from the hustle and bustle of South East London.
What did you do before you worked at TDM?
Prior to working at TDM, I spent 10 years working in the estate agency arena. I worked in both sales and lettings for predominantly privately-owned Estate Agents on high end luxury properties across South East London.
When I first started out in estate agency in 2004, I was a trainee with no experience (similar to when I started at TDM) for George Proctor and Partners. From trainee, I worked my way up to Sales and Branch Manager for a successful five branch estate agency in Bromley before relocating full time to sunny Canterbury where I made the move in to recruitment.
What was your first role at TDM?
I was initially headhunted by Tom back in 2015 when the business consisted of only 5 consultants and he was looking to grow the business. I had zero recruitment experience, but I think he liked my sales background! I was brought in as a Trainee to work on the Residential Design and Technical team alongside a Managing Consultant and was tasked with resourcing CVs for a busy department.
What is your current role at TDM?
I am currently Principal Consultant, heading up the Design and Technical team.
How have you progressed through the business?
Within two months of starting as a Trainee Consultant, I was promoted to a Recruitment Consultant, reporting directly into a Managing Consultant within my department.
Within these two months I learnt a lot and the promotion to a fully-fledged Recruitment Consultant enabled me to manage the full 360 recruitment process, working closely with clients and candidates, management of CVs and interviews, through to successful placement.
As part of the ongoing training and development process for each consultant, I worked in other sectors in the business including Town Planning (strategic and immediate), Development and Interior Design before moving back into the design and technical function full time. This meant I had good all-round knowledge of the construction process from cradle to grave.
In the time I’ve been here, I’ve been given ongoing support and training and have since been promoted to Senior Recruitment Consultant and following this, Principal Consultant. I have the freedom to work with an array of clients and candidates have always been given the opportunity to grow my own design and technical team around me.
What are you most proud of during your time at TDM?
My proudest achievement within TDM would be being recognised for my performance over a three-month period wherein I achieved Top Consultant within the business for a quarter.
This set the pathway for my promotion to Principal Consultant and I have had the opportunity to work alongside Resourcers and Trainees, training them up to work within the department.
Having the opportunity to build a strong team around me as the business continues to grow is extremely rewarding and satisfying as I have seen not only the team but the wider business grow over the last 3 years.
What would you recommend to people about TDM?
TDM Recruitment Group is a prodigious place to work and the individuals who work here are equally as fantastic. We all get along with each other, have a good laugh and enjoy what we do. We regularly have social events such as nights out in Canterbury, Go Karting or simply a beer down the pub on a Friday after work.
There is ongoing support, career progression and the opportunity to make a lot of money! As with any recruitment business, the work can be challenging, the hours are often long and every day is different from the last but the rewards are massive and as our MD always says, promotion is given to those who deserve it.
It’s like being a London recruiter but with the lovely surroundings of the Kent countryside (and without the traffic!), which is not something every recruiter can give. The location and setting really do work. If you’re looking for longevity and a long-term career, then TDM is certainly the place to work!
