This month, two of the best in the business are hitting their 6-year work anniversary with us. That’s six years of recruitment highs, lows, and everything in between. To mark the occasion, we sat them down to hear how they ended up in recruitment, what keeps them going and what anyone thinking about getting into recruitment should know.
how did you get into recruitment?
“I was headhunted into recruitment by an ex-boss from my estate agency days. He thought I’d be a good fit for the team and apparently, he was right. It wasn’t something I planned or even considered before but sometimes, the best opportunities find you when you’re not even looking.” – Mike
“Like everyone, I sort of fell into recruitment. I was looking at different career options and a friend suggested giving it a go. Once I started, I realised it was a role where I could genuinely connect with people and make a difference.” – Dan
what made you decide to stick with recruitment after the first year?
“I stuck with it because I was successful and doing well which keeps you motivated early on. I also took the opportunity to work in Australia for four years which was amazing.” –
“Unlike Mike, my first year was tough but I stuck with it because I could see the potential for growth. Seeing the results of my work, like helping people secure jobs and supporting businesses, gave me a real sense of achievement and made it worthwhile.” –
what’s been the most rewarding part of the last six years?
“Seeing tdm evolve and grow has been incredibly rewarding. When you’re part of something that’s come so far, every milestone feels significant.” –
“Building long-term relationships. Whether it’s seeing candidates succeed in their roles or having clients come back to me time and time again, those moments really stand out and make the job satisfying.” –
what’s the biggest challenges you’ve faced in recruitment?
“Too many to mention! Recruitment is full of highs and lows, but one thing that still gets to me is when people go back on their word. You learn to deal with it and carry on though!” –
“Probably the unpredictability of the market. There are quiet periods and busy times and it can sometimes be difficult to stay consistent. It’s taught me the importance of resilience and keeping a level head, even when things don’t go to plan.” –
what advice do you have for people wanting to get into recruitment?
“Be resilient. Recruitment isn’t for the faint-hearted but hard work really does pay off. It’s a job where you’ll need to weather some storms but if you can push through, the rewards are there. Stay focused, stay persistent, and don’t take setbacks personally.” –
“Be ready to work hard and stick with it, especially in the beginning. Recruitment can be demanding but it’s also rewarding if you’re willing to put the effort in. Also, take the time to really understand your clients and candidates, it makes all the difference.” –
if you could do one other job for a day, what would you choose?
“Football agent. Who wouldn’t want to spend a day working in football?” – Mike
“I think I’d give being a travel writer a go. Exploring new places and sharing the experience sounds like a nice change of pace, even if it’s just for a day.” – Dan
