Yay, you have a new job/ or next move planned! Ah, now you have to tell the boss…

The excitement of learning you have a new job to go to can often be mixed with the feeling of trepidation at having to tell your current company you’re leaving. Add into the mix remote working and you can end up trying to resign from a job that you now work miles away from. And while we always recommend trying to resign face-to-face, sometimes that’s just not possible due to people being on holiday, time constraints, and many other factors.

Thankfully our career experts are on-hand to help you navigate your resignation, and to help you get started we’ve posted below two examples of suggested resignation emails:

Option one:

Hi x, 

After much deliberation, I have decided to resign from (insert company name). Please accept this email as confirmation of my resignation, effective (insert date). 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the rest of the team for creating such a great/supportive place to work. This role has been invaluable in my career and I am proud to have contributed to X success. 

Please let me know how I can best help with the transitioning of my replacement. I know what a delicate time this can be and am here to help in any way I can. I will also start work on creating a comprehensive handover document. 

Please let me know what you need from me in regards to the next steps.

Option two:

Dear X, 

Please accept this email as my resignation in writing. My last day at (insert company) will be the (insert date). 

Thank you for the opportunities (insert company or you) have provided. I will of course endeavour to do all I can to ensure a smooth transition for the new employee during my notice period. 

If there is anything you need from me at this stage, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
