The Background
Anyone who has built in West Yorkshire knows the ground has a history. Legacy mine workings, made ground, steep valley sides and stubborn clays turn up on almost every site. This Yorkshire division of a national housebuilder runs a busy land pipeline, and many of the best opportunities come with engineering challenges attached. The division wants an Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers and turn tricky land into viable, well-engineered developments.
The Role
You’ll head up the engineering function, reporting to the Technical Director. You’ll manage a small team of engineers and have a strong voice in land acquisition decisions.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading engineering due diligence on land, including Coal Authority reports, intrusive investigations and abnormals appraisals
- Overseeing drill and grout programmes, remediation strategies and ground stabilisation design
- Directing the design of retaining structures, earthworks, drainage and highways on challenging sloping sites
- Managing Section 38, 278 and 104 agreements and adoption programmes across the division
- Controlling consultant appointments, fees and design programmes
- Working with commercial colleagues to keep engineering costs accurate at every stage
- Developing your engineers and building a consistent, confident team
What we’re looking for
- A senior engineer or Engineering Manager with a residential development background
- Experience of mining legacy and difficult ground conditions, which is highly desirable
- Strong knowledge of adoption processes, SuDS and drainage design
- Leadership experience, with the ability to manage people and priorities
- A civil engineering degree, ideally with chartership
What’s on offer
- £70,000-75,000 basic
- Car allowance and a divisional bonus scheme
- Share save scheme, contributory pension and private medical cover
- 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
- A clear route towards technical director roles in the business
