Job description

I’m proud to be working with an award winning and well-established house builder in Hertfordshire who have a rare opening in their team for an experienced Residential Civil Engineer. The business is renowned for being unique and exciting from competitors and this shows with high commendations from both their staff and the customers who buy a house. This is one of the reasons they have won so many awards and are known as a business people want to join.


Due to continued growth and several successful projects recently being won, they now have an opening for an experienced Residential Civil Engineer. As Senior Engineer your main role will be to prepare and issue detailed engineering design to coincide with the agreed programme to meet company standards and requirements and relevant regulatory requirements. You will also be a mentor and oversee more junior engineers in carrying out their necessary tasks.


Key Tasks include;


  • Read, understand and comply with the company procedures applicable to the development department and job function.
  • Preparing designs considering the cradle to grave development cycle with due regard to construction, maintenance and demolition in accordance with the requirements of the CDM Regulations. Prepare pre-construction information files in accordance with company procedures.
  • Responsible for the day to days supervision of your own team ensuring the management of project programmes and the issue of information to the overall department programme.
  • Review all technical site data with the Director and prepare a constraints plan to be used and updated where necessary throughout the design process.
  • Prepare brief instructing and assessing the work of topographical survey, soil investigation, ecological and other consultants as required after agreeing the scope of works, information required, programme and costs with the Technical Director.
  • Prepare planning layouts based upon drafts from the Head of Design as and when required by the Technical Director.
  • Preparing details engineering designs including layouts, roads, drainage and foundations in accordance with the programme agreed with the Technical Director.
  • Issue design information to building for construction as an initial release of information subject to the Directors approval. Subsequently issue further instructions and variation orders as required.
  • Preparing estimates at the planning application stages and at issue of information to the building department, adding information to the estimate comparison documents following approval of the Technical Director.
  • Preparing and obtaining technical approval for all works from building control, NHBC, the Environmental Agencies, Highway and Drainage Authorities and other regulatory body or agency appropriate to the project.
  • Visit the sites regularly through the design and build stages to monitor build providing support to the building team, responding to technical queries and reporting on any issues to the Director.
  • Submit site plans and boundaries to the land registry for estate plan approval immediately following a site purchase.


As the Residential Civil Engineer you will ideally have at least 5 years relevant work experience and hold a degree in Civil Engineering or HNC. You need to have strong IT skills including experience on packages such as Windows+ or PDS. You will have the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and ideally have MICE chartered status or incorporated.
