The Background
Small companies need people who can handle a bit of everything. This SME developer builds high-quality schemes across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and north Hampshire, usually five or six live sites at once. There’s no layered hierarchy and very little bureaucracy. The directors sit in the same office as everyone else. They want a Senior Engineer who enjoys autonomy and doesn’t need a large team around them to thrive.
The Role
You’ll be the business’s lead engineer, owning every engineering decision from land appraisal to adoption. You’ll work closely with the Technical Director and the land team, and your advice will shape which sites the business buys.
What you’ll be doing
- Assessing land for engineering viability, drainage, access and abnormals
- Managing civils consultants and reviewing their design with a practical eye
- Handling infiltration testing and SuDS design on chalk and variable Thames Valley ground
- Delivering Section 38, 278 and 104 agreements, and navigating local authority processes
- Advising on groundwater, flood risk and retaining structures
- Supporting site teams with setting out and technical queries
- Taking part in land and design meetings, where your view genuinely matters
What we’re looking for
- A Senior Engineer or experienced Civil Engineer with a residential development background
- Confidence working independently and making calls
- Strong knowledge of adoption processes, SuDS and drainage design
- Commercial awareness, so you can match good engineering with sensible costs
- A degree in civil engineering, with chartership welcome
What’s on offer
- £60,000-68,000 basic
- Car allowance and discretionary bonus
- 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
- Pension and private healthcare
- Real influence in a business small enough to feel it
